Controlling Combat Power Inflation: Pacing Design
1. Why is there less resource stockpiling in early F2P progression?
In F2P games, players often spend resources as soon as they receive them. Progression creates strong spending pressure and a resource-to-power conversion path. Players spend resources because spending them is usually the most obvious and efficient choice.
This conversion can create strong early growth feedback. This is why early power inflation is not always negative.
2. Pacing Design controls growth feedback.
In the early stage, the progression process needs to feel smooth, so players can stay in the game more easily.
On the input side, players need:
• simple and low-cost actions
• fewer interruptions
• simple control systems
• simple progression systems
• systems that are easy to understand and operate
On the output side, if we only talk about numbers, players need strong progression feedback.
A simple example of how numbers work:
• The player has 1 ATK and needs 4 attacks to kill Monster A.
• The player picks up a new weapon that gives +1 ATK, so now the player has 2 ATK.
• Now the player only needs to attack twice to kill the same monster.
With one pickup, the player’s ATK becomes 200% of its original value. The player can immediately feel the benefit of the weapon. The number increase is simple, but the experience change is large.
We can allow this in the early stage, but it cannot continue forever. Designing different growth feedback for different stages is Pacing Design.
Pacing Design is the value-release layer of inflation control.
3. Pacing Design works after Horizontal Design and Replacement Design.
We can use one formula to explain it:
• Content Value = Horizontal Design Value × Replacement Design Value × Configuration Efficiency
Here, Configuration Efficiency means how efficiently pacing releases value across different player stages.
4. Pacing Design Takeaway:
• Horizontal Design can move part of the expansion away from one direct vertical power curve.
• Replacement Design can extend content value through comparison, optimization, and replacement.
• Pacing Design can distribute growth feedback across different player stages.
Inflation is not simply a design mistake. In a value table, these are only numbers. But for players, these numbers represent growth, rhythm, goals, and meaning.
